Product Info

There are four common styles of hearing instruments. All four help with mild to moderate losses, but if your loss is more severe, choices can be limited. While size is the most obvious difference, each style has different attributes that are important to consider.

Behind-The-Ear (BTE) hearing instruments are the largest models and can accommodate a variety of circuit options and amplify sounds to a greater degree than most custom models. BTE's rest behind the ear and deliver sound to the ear through clear plastic tubing and an ear mold that fits comfortably in the outer portion of the ear.

In-The-Ear (ITE) instruments accommodate a variety of circuit options in a custom-made shell designed to fit in the outer portion of the ear. Its size and easy-to-use controls may be helpful for people with limited dexterity.

In-The-Canal (ITC) instruments are custom designed to fit in the ear canal. ITC's are discreet, yet still slightly visible within the outer ear. ITC instruments offer a variety of circuit choices, but provide less power than larger hearing aids.

Completely-In-The-Canal (CIC) instruments are the smallest and most discreet aids available. CIC's are custom designed to fit entirely in the ear canal, improving sound quality and reducing feedback. CIC's are popular for their aesthetic appeal, but the physiology of some individuals' ears may make the style unsuitable. In addition, some features (telephone coil, directional microphone) are not available because of the small size of the instrument.

A fifth style of hearing aid recently was introduced for individuals with high frequency hearing loss. On-the-Ear (OTE) instruments utilize an open ear approach to hearing aid fitting. A miniaturized behind-the-ear instrument is coupled to slender tubing and a flexible, non-occluding ear tip that is inserted discreetly within the ear canal. It provides individuals with relatively good low frequency hearing a comfortable alternative to custom products.
